This post is strictly for educational purposes only. Due to the variations related to hair loss, as every situation is different, it is always good to consult with your medical profession when concerned about excessive hair loss.
End of Dec 2019/2020 was a really bad year with the pandemic. With many trying to fathom what was really happening and the associated series of illness that came with it, excessive hair loss and a lot of shedding was very common and still is today: Through a process called Telogen Effluvium.
There are 3 main phases in the growth cycle:
Anagen (Growing phase), Catagen (Transitional phase) and Telogen (Resting/Shedding phase).
90% of hair growth is generally in the anagen phase. Catagen phase is a short phase where hair growth stops. At Telogen phase- This is the resting phase, the hair rests here and eventually shed. 10% of your hair is usually in this phase. Standard hair shed is typically 100-150 hairs a day.
Some of the common reasons for hair loss and current state of top 3 that should be taken into account in today's world:
Why Flus, infection, stress, nutritional deficiencies trigger telogen effluvium phase?
- Stress on the body: When the body is working to fight against viral, bacterial or any type of infection or illness, it uses up a lot of resources and energy within the body to do so. The immune system releases cytokines (signal molecules) to fight off those harmful pathogens. Another way, this can be described is...while "busy" fighting this off, an excessive and prolonged inflammatory response cam impact the hair follicles and cause a disruption to their standard or normal growth cycle. The body prioritizes essential function during illness. Hair growth is not considered a critical survival function. As a result of this, resources are diverted away from the hair follicles.
-
Hormonal balance levels: A common issue that can occur and with which even post-pregnancy moms are familiar with, as changes are occurring, sometimes it can take up to a 1 year to get back to pre-pregnancy times.
- Stress caused by illness can lead to elevated levels of stress hormone like cortisol. These can directly interfere with hair growth cycle
- Nutrional Deficiencies: When the body is short on vitamins and minerals like Iron, Zinc, Vitamin D, these are important for healthy hair growth.
It can happen after- Called " Delayed onset"
A key characteristic of telogen effluvium is that it doesn't usually happen immediately during the illness. Instead, one can typically see this occurring two to three months after the stressful event. This is because it took some time of the hair to prematurely enter into the telogen phase and then shed. This delay can make it confusing to relate or connect the hair loss to the past illness.
The great news is hair loss due to telogen effluvium is almost always temporary. Once the under-stressor e.g infection is resolved, the body recovers and hair follicle will generally return to a normal/standard growth cycle.
Hair regrowth usually takes within 3- 6 months and with people seeing a full regrowth within 6-12 months. Note, telogen effluvium does not damage the hair follicle themselves meaning the hair has ability to grow back.
